Yay! I've always wanted a wooden floor lamp, I found one about a year ago and it had several layers of chipped paint on it, but I walked away, regretting it ever since.

My infatuation with a WOODEN floor lamp started when I saw one in one of those high end furniture stores, to be honest I can't even remember which one it was any more, but it had a hefty price tag.

After the one that got away, I just gave up and bought this fake wooden lamp.....

I do like it, but it's made of hard plastic that looks like the wood that sells in Restoration Hardware (my favorite furniture store!). It's got that driftwood look to it, and it looks nice in my home. But it's so wonky, it's made of several pieces of this hard plastic and they don't "connect". The lamp sits crooked so you'd think you could twist the pieces together so they are solid. You can't do that, therefore the lamp sits wonky. Whatever.

Of course shortly after I buy the wonky lamp I find this one at the antique mall a mile from my house! I snatched it up for $30, stripped the cherry finish off of it and just left it bare, no finish on it at all. I love it, it looks just like the one I saw in the furniture store that I can't remember the name of! I found the perfect lamp shade for $20, so $50 later I have the floor lamp of my dreams!

It's the simple things.
Rhonda Vaudthttps://plus.google.com/117108752317219921117noreply@blogger.com1http://www.restoredtreasurestoo.com/2016/05/my-new-lamp.htmltag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8301302916213478515.post-71574128142941849252016-05-21T14:15:00.002-04:002016-05-21T14:25:06.056-04:00I'm back with a few projects we have been working on around the house

It's been awhile since I've written, taking a break I guess, that and I didn't think I had anything exciting to write about. I haven't been painting any beautiful pieces of furniture, I haven't worked on anything to sell in awhile, I have just been spending my time working on a bunch of little jobs that need to be done around my own home.

My front porch was looking a little tired for awhile now, so I'm giving it a little update.

My grandson helped me put a coat of varnish on these little lanterns that I got at Gabriel Bros a few years ago. If your not familiar with Gabe's (as I call it), it's a great place where I like to buy outdoor décor, the prices are perfect for things that sit out in the elements and have to be replace a bit more often.

I figured I could get a few more years out of these cute little lanterns if we put an outdoor finish on them.

Before pictures of my tired front porch

Derek just loves to help me, I can always find something for him to do.

With a little help from Grandma, controlling the drips and runs, they turned out pretty nice.

I was going to buy fabric to cover the seat cushions but I ran across some really inexpensive ones at my grocery store (they sell everything from soup to nuts), a three piece set for $20.00. Sold, I couldn't buy the fabric for that price. And seat cushions, when exposed to the morning sun needs to be replaced every year anyway, so I went for it. The cute pillow came from HomeGoods for a measly $15.00!

Now we just need a few flowers to bloom to bring on the color!

We have been transforming our backyard living space into a retreat, by putting up a Pergola, someplace where we can just chill out after a busy week. But honestly, we needed a shade source since our trees aren't getting big fast enough to suit us. And much needed privacy since we live on a corner lot and can be seen from three sides. I feel like we are on display every time we're outside. I love this though, we have only had it up for a couple of weeks but I have already found myself sitting out there reading and having dinner while the hubby is away. We want to add some curtains as well so we can enjoy it even as the weather gets a bit cooler.

I recovered those tired pillows from the front porch to put on the patio furniture in back, just trying to extend the life of these pillows for a bit longer. They are outdoor pillows so they were in perfect shape, they were just badly faded.

I do love sewing my own outdoor pillow covers anyway because I have a huge choice of beautiful fabrics that if I were to buy them ready made at a garden center would cost me oodles!

The challenge here was finding a fabric that would marry the color of red from my home to the brownish/goldish/orangeish color of our outdoor furniture. But I did it, and I love the fabric.
If the weather stays nice for a whole weekend we can work on planting, we still need a privacy border and some beautiful flowering bushes to fill in the area behind the living space. And I'd love to have some container gardens filling in some areas.

It takes time, but it's getting there.

I also got my lamp refinished........

and rewired, now I just need to find a shade for it.

I've been getting a few painting jobs to make a bit of extra cash to pay for said fabrics and pillows:)

And I have been repainting.......

and creating those signs for my house.

I will post pictures of the "afters" in another post.

So I have been a busy gal, but in my own time, and that feels wonderful!

Rhonda Vaudthttps://plus.google.com/117108752317219921117noreply@blogger.com2http://www.restoredtreasurestoo.com/2016/05/im-back-with-few-projects-we-have-been.htmltag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8301302916213478515.post-75567446325281091662016-04-05T23:34:00.001-04:002016-04-05T23:34:19.350-04:00Pillows from my old lace stashThis week I've been busy catching up on a few things that I've had to get finished. Tedious little jobs that I always have make a "to do" list for, or I forget to do them.

I gave the first coat of paint to the inside of that big cupboard that we moved to my husbands office. I'm finishing up a small side table for my grand daughter's bedroom that we are redecorating. I'm working on a sign to hang on one of my walks, and I also have been moving things around from one spot to the next trying to decorate the large areas above my entertainment units.

I'm just getting the Spring fever itch to change things up a bit.

I've also been working on some pillows to sell, I got these two almost finished on Saturday. I just have to close them up and they'll be finished.

I used an old lace table cloth for one of the pillows and some really thick lace that bordered old linen valances, both are adorned with extra vintage lace and flowers made from round doilies. I always add a bit of bling for a bit of sparkle.

These pillows are so much fun for me to create, once I get started I can't quit! It's exactly how I pictured it in my mind, except the doors to hide the TV, but I contacted Dog Eared Primitives and he's making me some now.

It took me awhile to finish this because I had to paint the whole thing twice to achieve the look I wanted, but it was well worth it. From a distance the distressing is subtle, but up close you can see it very well.

I'm just adding a few pictures because I tried all day yesterday to get this posted, for some reason it wouldn't go.

I'm in love with it, the storage is crazy good, and I've only got 1/3 of it filled! I'm so excited, this means super storage for two of my rooms now, the master bedroom and my husband's office......which is a disaster.

(There's his new lamp he made room for!)

It also means relocating this cabinet to my husband's office. I do have to paint the inside of this cabinet once it's moved, right now it's painted a flat red, I have some left over light gray that I can use for that.

Once it's all dry, we can take stuff from this smaller cabinet here:

and spread stuff out a bit, making it easier to find things.....I hope. I will finally be painting this one as well, I never did get his office redecorated when I did the rest of the house. I painted this cabinet black, years ago, with scenes I painted on the raised panel doors. It was my first attempt at decorative painting on furniture.....don't judge!

He's also got this red and mustard display piece in his office that houses his collection of International tractors (it's a homage to his farming days as a kid from Iowa:)

This cabinet, and the tractors, will be going to the "man cave" in the basement...........(happy dance!) The colors will work down there because it's an intentional mix of eclectic decor.

I still have got a lot of painting to do, but I'm anxious to finally get the office to match the rest of the house and gain much needed storage. I'm so hoping that by having both of the cabinets in the office, that it won't look too crowded.

I've been holding out on doing anything about wall decor because I do have to relocate a lot of things that I've already got. Pictures that I've got hanging on the wall where the entertainment center is going will have to find a new home. So lots of things to think about now.

If all goes well, I'll at least have pictures of the entertainment center in it's place this weekend.

Rhonda Vaudthttps://plus.google.com/117108752317219921117noreply@blogger.com0http://www.restoredtreasurestoo.com/2016/03/much-needed-organization.htmltag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8301302916213478515.post-68099904937666036242016-03-22T19:37:00.001-04:002016-03-22T19:37:22.077-04:00The last step before I distress the entertainment centerI got the final coat on the entertainment center today, now I will leave it until Friday to let the paint "cure" before I distress it.

I'm always sure to let the pieces sit for a day or two, making sure the paint is dry enough to start distressing it.

It also gives me a chance to go get groceries, clean my house a bit and sweep up the little fur balls that have collected in the hallway!!!

Rhonda Vaudthttps://plus.google.com/117108752317219921117noreply@blogger.com2http://www.restoredtreasurestoo.com/2016/03/the-last-step-before-i-distress.htmltag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8301302916213478515.post-86310785829535574602016-03-20T20:40:00.001-04:002016-03-20T22:44:19.059-04:00Distressing using a heat gunI've spent the last four days working on our entertainment center, Thursday I filled nail holes sanded the whole thing down inside and out. Sweet! We told him we weren't in any hurry for it when we ordered it, but now I'm really anxious to have it.

I finally got a call from him this week telling me it was finished and we could come get it anytime. Unfortunately we are busy this weekend and aren't able to make the trip to go get it. Hopefully nothing comes up and we'll be able to get it next weekend.

I am so ready to reorganize things in our bedroom and having this piece will give us the storage we need for our bedroom and my husbands office, since the current cupboard will go in ther to help organize his space. I haven't been able to do anything anywhere until I get that piece in place because it will mean finding new homes for everything that hangs on the walls in those two rooms.

I'm really anxious to see how it looks, we drew it up on paper, but actually seeing what we came up with has me nervous, I hope I like it after we get it! And of course it won't be painted either, I opted to finish it myself, so I'll have to picture it finished in my mind.

Actually the timing couldn't be any better, I have been painting a clients house for the last two weeks, so I wouldn't have had time to finish it anyway. I love how the lamps turned out, and it was a fun project to do with my hubby. We do pretty good, the two of us, I design and he builds with my direction. We are true DIYers that's for sure.

The baluster's cost me $5 each at my local junk shop, but by the time we bought the lamp works and the shades I could have saved myself the work by buying some beautiful lamps at TjMaxx, but I wanted real wood lamps and I wanted them distressed. They turned out exactly how I'd pictured in my head.

The baluster's were pretty thickly painted with what was, no doubt, lead paint, so I stripped two layers off and stopped at this point.

My husband thought we should add a base so the lamps wouldn't be top heavy, then we added a bit of trim to finish them off.

I then had to recreate the finish on the bases to match the lamp bodies. I painted the base first with a tan craft paint that I had, then I dry brushed white and cream paint over it. I wiped them down while the paint was still wet and sanded them to match the tops.

We went to Home Depot today and I found the perfect shades.

One of the lamps went in the guest bedroom

the other lamp is going in my husbands office, but he said he needed to clean it before he places his new lamp.......

(happy dance)

Rhonda Vaudthttps://plus.google.com/117108752317219921117noreply@blogger.com2http://www.restoredtreasurestoo.com/2016/03/my-finished-lamps.htmltag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8301302916213478515.post-57785163278390925162016-02-29T21:11:00.001-05:002016-03-01T15:12:37.700-05:00Baluster lamp update

I've been so busy the last week, I got my root canals done on Monday so that was a good thing. Didn't have any pain at all with them so it didn't slow me down much.

I painted my grand daughter's bedroom, she's going from her "big" girl room to her tween room, my how they grow! It seems like yesterday that I painted her colorful room in bright pink and blue.

She chose her colors this time, she's 13 now, and we painted her room a creamy white on three walls and a nice light gray color on her "accent" wall. The walls look a bit bare, but I'm a stickler for what goes up, and I haven't been actively looking either.

My 13 year old grand daughter, Paige, is quite the artist and she recently drew a still life in school and I loved it! I asked her if I could have it to frame and hang on my wall, she scrunched her nose up as if to say, "seriously?!" She gave it to me & papa so I found this simple frame for it so it doesn't take away from her work.

It hangs in our kitchen with two of my favorite things, my Ohio/Iowa sign and my little sign I bought while in Germany.

Paige's still life

My daughter bought me this little Ohio sign, but the "heart" of it is an outline of my home state of Iowa, where my heart still resides.

I love this little German sign, which translated, means "Home is home"

So one bare space filled, and one that makes me smile:)

Rhonda Vaudthttps://plus.google.com/117108752317219921117noreply@blogger.com4http://www.restoredtreasurestoo.com/2016/02/paige-art.htmltag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8301302916213478515.post-75053822246819465792016-02-18T18:46:00.000-05:002016-02-18T18:46:16.205-05:00Finally feeling good again!
Today was the first day that I haven't had tooth pain in seven days and it felt wonderful! That pain is the worst and the fact that you just can't do anything because of it was driving me to the brink! I've been taking an antibiotic for the infection and prescription pain medicine too, but today I stopped the pain meds..........I hate taking anything like that. I think the infection is going away, which is taking the pain away too. Soon, I will have the teeth fixed and all will be good in the world:)

My house is a mess because of it too, I haven't done much, so today I started cleaning the house and wandering around thinking of some of the changes I want to make. I'm getting a little bored with what I've got and I just need to make a few changes. I also need to think about some wall art, I've had bare spots on the walls for months, but I just don't know what I want.

Art is very personal for me, I can't just go out and buy a picture that doesn't mean anything to me. I've never really had a lot of pictures on the wall except for my gallery wall and the heirloom pieces that belong to my mother-in-law. And I have my ornate antique frames that I leave empty just because I feel they are a work of art in themselves. I don't want many pictures, but I do want something that means something to my husband and I. We've been on so many wonderful trips, I think I'm going to look into turning a few of our photos into black and white prints to frame.

The weather is suppose to be nice this Saturday, in the 60's, I think I'm going to get out and revel I the warmth!!!

Have a wonderful weekend ahead, I know I will.........pain free!!! We got hammered last night with 6 more inches of snow on top of what we already had. We lucked out and had a very mild winter.....until the middle of January, but we can't complain.

I do love living in an area that has the four seasons, I love cozying up to our fireplace in the cold snowy months, but sometimes we just need to get away from it for just a bit. My husband and I managed to escape right after the huge snow storm that swept the lower states below us and the states to the East, we lucked out here in Ohio because it just missed us. Never the less we got out of here and headed to Key West, where we spent 8 wonderful days. Which is one of the reasons why I haven't been posting on my blog. When we got home, we were met with what we escaped from in the first place, more dreary, cloudy, rainy/snow mixed weather and it hasn't stopped snowing since.

It was Monday, the 8th, when we got back home, and on Thursday I started having issues with my teeth on the right top and bottom. I have been having problems with sensitivity for quite some time and my dentist appt. in January showed nothing. If you've ever had a toothache, headache, earache, you know there isn't anything worse than head pain. I've always thought I had a high pain tolerance, but for the past 5 days, it has been debilitating, which is the second reason why I haven't been posting. Crazy as it sounds I didn't have any issues while we were away, I think maybe we just need to move south!

Yesterday I went to my primary doctor, hoping she could find the problem, she couldn't, but she did suggest I go to an Endodontist...............a doctor that specializes in root canals.

So today I had my appointment with the specialist and thank God he found the problem that's been causing my pain. I have an infected tooth and a dead one........I need two root canals and are scheduled for next Tuesday and I can't wait, I just want this pain to end. Until then he gave me a prescription for an antibiotic to get rid of the infection, and a pain med to control the pain.

I feel pretty good this afternoon, the pain is tolerable, but Tuesday won't come quick enough for me.

The last post I wrote was about my entertainment center that we are having built for us, I haven't heard from Dog Eared Primitives yet and I am getting so anxious. Not that I can do anything with it anyway until I'm 100%, I'm just anxious to see it!

I'm hoping to get a call telling me that we can come pick it up this weekend, and that I'll feel good enough to go get it. I'm going a little stir crazy just hanging out and not being productive. I hate being a slug!

Rhonda Vaudthttps://plus.google.com/117108752317219921117noreply@blogger.com4http://www.restoredtreasurestoo.com/2016/02/winter-has-arrived-and-my-two-root.htmltag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8301302916213478515.post-35384330118040643442016-01-29T23:24:00.000-05:002016-01-29T23:28:47.507-05:00Information on my Entertainment center

We've ordered our new piece of furniture for the master bedroom, the one needed to hold a TV and some clothes and I'm so excited about it. I loved the idea of customizing a piece so you know it's going to be exactly what you want and need. I'd looked and looked for used pieces of furniture that would work but I just wasn't successful.

I really didn't want to spend the money on a custom piece but sometimes you want something to be just right. I knew I wanted to unload one of my dressers in the master bedroom, that's why I wanted a large piece that would be multi-functional. And even though I spent more than I wanted, it still cost considerably less than a piece this big at any traditional furniture store, and I will have this furniture for a long time.

If you follow my blog you'll know that I am having the piece built by my favorite furniture builder, Dog Eared Primitives. And I have two pieces of furniture that get a lot of attention from my readers. So I thought I would feature them in this post.

This is the corner cupboard that we bought several years ago.

And our entertainment center, we bought it about four years ago and have gotten a lot of inquiries about it. It's actually three pieces, each are 36" wide and 6' tall. It spans 9 feet along the long wall in the great room. I wanted something that would utilize that whole space, and I got that and so much more! It has storage galore and I just fell in love with the old doors.

Both were built by Dog Eared Primitives, but we bought them in a little shop in Shipshewana, IN called "Thankful Heart", he sells a lot of furniture to them.

The gentleman who builds this furniture has a shop in Angola, IN and an antique store called "Homestead Antique Mall". I'm not sure where his workshop is, where he makes his furniture, but he sells it inside of the mall.

He also does shows and there is a list of the towns and dates on their website. He also has a warehouse that you can visit by appointment only.

His furniture is super primitive, his designs, his finishes, everything he does makes these look like authentic primitive antiques. If you love the grungy, purist primitive look, you will love all of his furniture. But if you don't want that look you can order it unfinished and finish it yourself. What I love about this furniture though, is that they can easily be transformed into the country "farmhouse" look just by painting it white.

They were really easy to work with and he can build any configuration you can think of. He uses old doors in his designs if the piece calls for a door.

When we bought our corner cupboard and entertainment center they were painted as you see these pieces, but I painted them white myself. On our new piece I thought about asking him to leave it unfinished since I was going to paint it anyway, but I loved the texture his finishes gave my pieces after I'd painted them, so I ordered it finished.

Here's what my corner cupboard and entertainment center looked like when we bought them..........

Before:

<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-6idNtsVjGqU/Vqws-GXMQPI/AAAAAAAAfYA/hHdXJl44Pr8/s640/blogger-image--882260191.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; Now mind you, this is how it ALWAYS goes, I'm sure with you as well. As we were perusing the junk store my daughter runs across a couple of porch balusters. Perfect in every way, perfect height, perfect dimension, perfect color. If you'd known how long I'd been searching for porch balusters to make lamps out of, you'd understand my frustration, yet I could hardly contain myself! Of course I gave up my search just before Christmas and buckled at Target and TJ Maxx and got a couple of really nice lamps at really nice prices, because let me tell you that the balusters I did find were a bit costly for my blood. The ones we found yesterday were $5.00 each, so I'm going to make a lamp for my husbands office.

A couple of years ago I was out junking and ran across an awesome antique turned wood floor lamp, I loved it, but didn't need it so I passed. It was only $35.00 and the wonderful chipped paint on it was perfect. Since then, I had to buy a different floor lamp for behind my husbands chair so again, I went and bought one a new one at Target. It wasn't an antique, but I do love it. I never got that beautiful real wood lamp out of my head though, and was quite upset that I didn't just buy it.

Yesterday, as we were walking through the antique mall, there sat a beautiful Antique turned wood floor lamp............$20.00! Needless to say it came home with me, I needed a lamp in my reading room anyway because the ones I had in there were just too heavy for the room (you can see them in my Etsy shop). We already had a nice TV in there, but the entertainment unit is big enough to hold a 49" TV, so I guess he felt the need to accommodate. (Can I just mention the man has a 52" down in his man-cave! What is it about a man and his TV's?) Anyhow, he took the 40" TV that used to be in the great room and put it in our master bedroom, now I'm left in a predicament, it doesn't fit in the current TV cupboard.

The small TV that we had in the master is still inside this cupboard because I have no clue where to put it, (You've heard of "musical chairs"? How about musical TV's!!) and this cupboard also has three shelves that hold our clothes, so it served two purposes. The TV to your right was in the great room, the one that needs a new piece of furniture, right now it's just sitting on these chests waiting for a home.

To be honest, it's been my plan for some time to rethink our home space. Some of our furniture just doesn't serve our needs very well anymore, so this whole TV situation has actually pushed me to start the process. It's going to be confusing because it means deciding which pieces to keep and moving furniture that I want to keep around from other parts of the house, finding better homes for them.

Take this little black cupboard here in my husband's office........

This room never got the makeover that the rest of the house got a few years ago. I just couldn't even go there, and I mean that literally, I couldn't go there because I can hardly get in the room. Lol, I'm exaggerating a bit, but the room is a nightmare. And I'm ready to tackle the mess.

First I need to find a new piece of furniture to house all this stuff that's in this little cabinet because it's too small, and because we have to get down on our hands and knees to get at the stuff inside, lol. So now I'm hoping that the tall cupboard in the master bedroom will work. It's perfect for the job, if it fits in the space. That will remedy this problem. But then I'll be left with the little black cupboard that will get a new paint job for sure, and if I can't find a place for it I will sell it.

I've also been rethinking the whole dresser situation in the master bedroom for some time. We have two dressers, a large chest, and the tall cupboard that hold clothes and a lot of them we don't even wear. I mean how many everyday clothes does one need, I have my favorites that I always go back to. Why do we hang on to stuff? Seriously, I think we could downsize on the clothes just a bit and eliminate one dresser so we'd have more space in there.

So I want a functional piece for the master bedroom that houses the TV and clothes. I've gone to several used furniture stores in the area, I've perused Craig's List, gone on eBay and Etsy looking for something that will work. I couldn't find anything that I didn't love enough to warrant the prices on even the used pieces. And I wanted something that fit the aesthetics of my other large furniture pieces. So we decided to have it built, by my favorite furniture builder from Angola, IN. Dog Eared Primitives. Yesterday we drove the 3 1/2 hours one way to visit his antique shop and to custom order a piece that will serve us well.

They built two pieces we currently have:

In the meantime, I am going to be focusing on the functionality of our home, move pieces that can be better utilized in other areas of the house and getting rid of those pieces we simply don't need.

It will take a few weeks to build our furniture piece and I can't wait, but I will be sharing pictures when we get it.

My goal for our master bedroom is to simplify it and pack a punch at the same time.

I will not sacrifice great décor on my quest for simplicity!

.

Rhonda Vaudthttps://plus.google.com/117108752317219921117noreply@blogger.com6http://www.restoredtreasurestoo.com/2016/01/continuing-my-quest-for-simplicity.htmltag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8301302916213478515.post-52504269181261858042016-01-19T18:37:00.001-05:002016-01-19T20:41:42.777-05:00My reasons for "simplifying" my life
Being a minimalist has always been sort of a way of life for my husband and I, pretty much all of my married life actually, but not by choice. We were both so young when we got married in January, 1974. Since our birthdays are both in January....we just turned 19. Only a year out of high school, and no college for either one of us, our money was tight. So tight that a few of our first homes in Iowa were old farmhouses that, if it weren't for us, would have ended up abandoned. The landlord just wanted someone to live in the house so there'd be someone there to watch over the property. Our rent was 25.00 at one house and another was 25.00 during the summer months and free during the winter months because of the cost of heating them. The houses were livable.........barely, but we managed to make them home. It didn't matter to us, we were young and in love. Honestly we didn't have two dimes to rub together, as the parents would say, but it didn't matter, and I wouldn't change thing.

That's the way things were for quite a few years, just getting by. When our kids came along, I would work only part time because I wanted to be there for them. I didn't have to work, it would have been hard, but the money I made went for the extras, which were pretty important extras.... Christmas, birthdays.....The amount of money I made really determined what type of Christmas we had, fortunately we never had to go without a nice holiday. I think living like that definetly teaches you how to prioritize, and appreciate the things you work hard for.

In the summer I would pick up "bean walking" jobs to make extra money for school clothes in the fall, and a couple of years I made enough money to take us all on a family vacation. Bean walking in Iowa means walking the soybean fields and pulling and chopping weeds that were sometimes taller than we were. We started in the wee hours of the morning, when the dew was heavy on the plants and we would freeze, we'd work into the afternoon when the sun was too hot to continue. Bean walking usually lasted for two to three weeks, it was hard work with long, dirty hours in the hot, hot sun..............again, I wouldn't change a thing. We didn't get but two family vacations when our kids were young, but we made great memories and that made all the hard work well worth it. We worked hard for our money back in those days and are now able to reap the rewards.

Now the kids are all grown up with children of their own and my husband and I are able to make wonderful memories with them. Every year we take the crew to the Outer Banks, the smiles on the grandkids faces are priceless to us, they have a blast!

And that's what has become more important to us as we get older, it's not "things" that make you happy, but the memories that you make.

My husband and I went on a trip of a lifetime at the end of 2014, parts of Germany and Paris. We were invited by my niece who had been living in Germany for three years. Since my husband and my relatives came over from Germany years ago, it was always our plans to go. He still has relatives there, but I'm not sure I do, my maternal grandfather came to the U.S. as a young man and my maternal grandmother's parents were from Germany although she was born here in the United States. It was our plan to go to Germany first to get an idea of what to expect, then again in a couple of years, take my mother along and maybe go further north towards the Polish border to visit her parents homeland. Our trip was rather spur of the moment in that we knew Nikki and her husband were being relocated the following Spring and she wanted us to come during the Christmas season so we could experience the Christmas marts. We were so fortunate to have Nikki there as our personal tour guide....it's pretty intimidating when you don't speak the language. I've gotten a lot of my Christmas decorations that I didn't want anymore off to Goodwill and I can't believe how much "lighter" it feels to get rid of a bit more baggage. My basement closets even have some empty storage spots, I just need not fill them up again!

New Years Eve is a cleansing of sorts, at least for me, I always want to start the new year fresh in every area of my life, and it doesn't look like I'm alone in that thought process. I've been reading all kinds of articles lately on becoming minimalists, a lot of the blogs that I personally follow are also blogging about simplifying. Everyone is wanting to rid themselves of unnecessary "stuff", longing for simplicity and everything that goes along with it.

With the whole "tiny house" movement that has become even more popular in the last couple of years, it's proof that we are ready to downsize, to rid ourselves of material things to make it possible to experience all there is in the world to experience.

I've always been a bit of a minimalist, I've never been one who wanted to be defined by material things. "Keeping up with the Jones's" is a concept that I could never understand. Why on earth would anyone want to go into debt trying to keep up with the neighbors?! I could care less about social statice, it means nothing to me. Other than a mortgage we owe nothing and nothing is more liberating than that.

My husband and I aren't tight wads by any means. We have always lived way within our means, and it's provided us with a lot of perks.

I love to shop but I never over indulge, I shop when I need something and sometimes for fun, but I never buy just to buy.....never.

I don't have a drawer or drawers full of beauty products. I have one tube of mascara, one container of blush, one lotion for my face, one bottle of shampoo etc. you get the idea. And I don't replace stuff until it's gone. I don't have anymore clothes than what my closet can handle, same goes for shoes. I've just never been one to over buy....on anything.

I'm still driving my 2009 4-runner, we eat out maybe twice a month or when we are running errands and maybe on special occasions.

We do live in a beautiful home, but it's filled with furniture I've bartered for or have gotten at flea markets and thrift stores. Knowing how to paint, refinish, repurpose and sew has been a big help.

That being said, I've become even more interested in becoming a minimalist.....if it means experiencing and living life to the fullest.

What are your thoughts on becoming a minimalist?

Rhonda Vaudthttps://plus.google.com/117108752317219921117noreply@blogger.com4http://www.restoredtreasurestoo.com/2016/01/well-other-than-having-bug-first-part.htmltag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8301302916213478515.post-39828358948686817152016-01-10T16:01:00.002-05:002016-01-26T20:37:04.434-05:00Pillows made and my Etsy shop
I'm completely cured of my nasty cold that I thought would never go away and I've been working the last week getting all of the Christmas decorations put away. I did a managed to get everything into six totes, which leaves me with four empty totes!! Everything now neatly fits in the furnace room in the basement and everything is labeled too, so I don't have to go though every tote next year when it's time to drag it all out again!

Last week I worked on pillows that I started way before Christmas, I got them finished and posted them in my Etsy shop, Luleemaes.

My pillows are made using antique or vintage fabrics and lace. I have always had a passion for old lace and I started collecting it years ago not knowing exactly what I would do with it, I just couldn't leave it behind. I have quite a stash so I thought I would start making these beautiful pillows. I have made and sold quite a few of them at Alter'd Relics but have never sold them on Etsy. I use vintage embellishments when I can find some that are affordable enough to use. And I learned how to make fabric flowers thanks to YouTube so I wouldn't have to buy them. And, because I like the fact that my flowers aren't perfect, makes my pillows a bit more charming:)

If you notice haven't noticed already, I added a few new features on my side bar. My favorite little shop, that you may remember me mentioning before, Alter'd Relics in Barberton, Ohio. It's where I take some of my Restored Treasures to sell. I'm lucky to have found such a great place to sell some of my bigger pieces of furniture.

I'm also featuring my Etsy shop, it's something my daughter, Carrie, and I started some time ago. We love to shop, we love to go junking is a better word. And we know we can't keep all of the awesome stuff that we run across so we decided it would be fun to pass these treasures along to you. We really haven't been that serious about it, it's been a fun project for both of us and we do sell things, but this year I'd like to step it up a notch and actually sell smalls that I make.

So click on Alter'd Relics photo and check out their website to see how beautiful their little shop is, or follow them on Facebook. And click on my Etsy shop to see what we have to offer, keep in mind that we try all the time to add new items.

Rhonda Vaudthttps://plus.google.com/117108752317219921117noreply@blogger.com0http://www.restoredtreasurestoo.com/2016/01/im-completely-cured-of-my-nasty-cold.htmltag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8301302916213478515.post-54165756523681740172016-01-03T21:48:00.000-05:002016-01-03T23:32:10.805-05:00My hopes for the new year
I hope every one's New Year is starting off on a good note.

Mine............not so much! I started getting a cold the Sunday after Christmas, the day we celebrated with our family. I have had such a nasty cold for 2 weeks, my energy level has been 0. Every time I coughed a sharp pain would shoot through my head and my ribs would hurt. When it moved to my head I had vertigo so bad that I only felt good when I was laying down. I'm a mess! The only thing I've managed to get done in two weeks is take some of the Christmas decorations down and vacuum after our party. My trees are undecorated but they are waiting to be put away. And because I was sick and because the weather forecast called for rain, ice and snow along our route to Iowa, we had to cancel our annual trip back home to see the grandkids. We're going to wait until the weather is nicer to make the trip!

I got off track there, anyway, the totes are spread out in the basement waiting for a home. I don't want to put them away until I've made one final pass through them. My plan was to organize my Christmas decorations again this year and see if I can eliminate a few more totes. My quest for organizing and purging continues. I feel a bit better today, so I may be on the down slide.

Have any of you made any New Years resolutions for 2016? I usually don't make any, to me, that just invites failure. But, like every one else I'm sure, I try to think about changes that I hope to make during the new year, or continue doing those things I've discovered that make me a better me.

Like making time for myself. At the end of 2015 I started riding my stationery bike 17 miles a day, 3 times a week. I'm going to continue that and then some.

Last year my husband and I both started to slow down a bit. Just taking time to live life, spending Saturdays together, just the two of us, driving to wherever looking for places to stop to go antiquing or junking. Spending more time tending to my gardens and actually enjoying the process instead of thinking of it as a mundane chore. I actually learned to embrace it and even planted some herbs in a large pot so I had fresh basil and oregano to put in my home made spaghetti sauce, and the fresh rosemary is amazing in my chicken dishes! Making sure all of the important things get done and not obsess over the things that don't

I do have a list of things that I want to start up again.......

Read more. I suppose this could go under making time for myself. But I have got to get back to reading..........is there anything better than curling up to a good book on a wintery day?!

Paint. I want to start back into painting acrylics and learn to paint with oils. This is my year for that..........I need to start painting and creating art.

And one thing I want to learn.........for sure, even if I have to take classes

Photography. I've always been intrigued and my husband bought me a beautiful camera for my birthday last year and I have to learn how to use it without relying on auto! I'm excited about this!

So, are there any changes you want to make for the New Year?

Rhonda Vaudthttps://plus.google.com/117108752317219921117noreply@blogger.com3http://www.restoredtreasurestoo.com/2016/01/i-hope-every-ones-new-year-is-starting.htmltag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8301302916213478515.post-20392092885774990202015-12-31T19:09:00.001-05:002015-12-31T19:09:14.056-05:00

Merry Christmas!

Rhonda Vaudthttps://plus.google.com/117108752317219921117noreply@blogger.com2http://www.restoredtreasurestoo.com/2015/12/merry-christmas.html
